Finally...

Day ???

It has been almost three months since I last updated the blog. Many reasons pushed me away from the blog. One of the main reasons was the difficulty of the golden pieces to be assembled together. It took the kids sleepless and restless days and nights using trial and error technique to assemble the golden pieces.

So finally, they have succeeded to put the pieces together and join the two parts together.

The total assembled pieces is 9120 pieces, with the same number to go.

Here are couple of pictures.

That's all for now. Will start updating the blog when we start the second half.

Day 26, 27, 28

We couldn't post anything in the past three days as the modem was down and needed a software update.

To start, here is a photo of the puzzle we are working on now:

Day 26 ( Monday, Feb 7, 2011 ):

After sorting most of the pieces yesterday, we have started to assemble the outline frame. The total assembled was 271 pieces with 4289 pieces to go.

A photo of the assembled frame is here:

This is the end of day 26.

Day 27 ( Tuesday, Feb 8, 2011 ):

We are working on assembling the pieces randomly. The day ended with a low number of pieces assembled, 85 pieces, which makes the total assembled so far 356 pieces with 4204 pieces to go.

No photo for this day.

This is the end of day 27.

Day 28 ( Wednesday, Feb 9, 2011 ):

Few things in the puzzle have started to show up. Since we were locating random pieces but they wouldn't assemble together and we knew where they go in, I have drawn the main big two circles as well as the small ones on the cardboard. Every piece that was located was then placed on the cardboard where it belongs to until it fits with the next when found.

the result of this day was assembling 174 pieces that makes the total assembled 530 pieces with 4030 pieces to go.

Few photos of the work are displayed here:

This is the end of day 28.

Day 24

Day 24 ( Saturday, Feb 5, 2011 ):

Wow, what a day. Finally we have harvested the long hours that we have planted in this part of the puzzle.

IT IS DONE. Part "D", the right lower section has been done except for the golden frame. We have focused hardly to finish assembling the oceans (first photo), and we had around 160 pieces left were all look the same. We had to check every piece in all possible locations until it fits in its correct place. Took us a long time to do it, until it was the last piece were it was placed (photo 2). The last photo shows the full puzzle been assembled.

Today's result was assembling 491 pieces (the highest number of pieces that have been assembled in ONE day) which brings the total to 4422 pieces with 138 pieces to go.

We have totally stopped working on the golden frame as it was very difficult to assemble. Beside, when the result at the end of the day is low, it makes us feel depressed. So, to refresh our souls to assemble more, we have decided to skip the golden frame at the moment and delay it till the end.

The result of today assembling was 307 pieces that makes the total so far 2317 pieces with 2243 pieces to go.

Here is a picture of today ( and previous days ) work.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Day 10

Day 10 ( Saturday Jan 22nd, 2011 ):

Still working on the golden frame. Naturally, whenever someone assemble a piece of a specific solid color, the puzzle gets easier a little. We had the feeling that it is getting harder not easier.

The result of today was to assemble 29 pieces that brings the total to 1708 pieces with 2852 pieces to go.

Since the amount of the assembled pieces are not too many, I didn't feel that posting a picture will show any difference from the one posted yesterday.

This is the end of day 10.

Friday, January 21, 2011

Day 9

Day 9 ( Friday Jan 21th, 2011 ):

Was focusing today to work on the golden frame. Spent many hours interchanging every piece with many different locations trying to figure out where it fits.

Here is the picture of today result.

This is the end of day 9.

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Day 8

Day 8 ( Thursday Jan 20th, 2011 ):

It was good that yesterday we had completed the 4 corners. This has helped us today to connect and assemble the frame. Even though the frame is not done completely, we have sorted out all of the frame pieces inside the new frame so that we can work on them tomorrow.

We figured that this is really the extremely difficult pieces as some pieces look alike and will fit with some pieces. The only way to figure if they are the right pieces or not is when it is time to assemble the surrounding pieces. If the pieces is correct, the others will fit around it easily, otherwise it has to be changed.

The outcome of today was assembling 154 pieces which brings the total to 1559 pieces with 3001 pieces to go.

Here is the picture of the end work.

This is the end of day 8.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Day 7

Day 7 ( Wednesday Jan 19th, 2011 ):

Today was good as we have done the other three black corners. Even though the black pieces were almost identical and very difficult to put them together, it was a real challenge at the end.

the end of the day result was assembling 310 pieces which brings the total to 1405 pieces with 3155 pieces to go. we all feel great with this accomplishment.

Here are few photos.

This is the end of day 7.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Day 6

Day 6 ( Tuesday Jan 18th, 2011 ):

it is always good when one of two things happen:
1. Start a new place in the puzzle, or
2. completing an area and makes it grow.

I guess this what has happened today, as seen in the photos below.

As I had anticipated before, the frame is really very difficult. In the black corner, we have put the frame pieces together, and they looked perfect. When we tried to fill it up from inside, they didn't fit with some pieces of the frame. This had forced us to remove the unfit pieces and try to find the correct ones and replace them. What a challenge.

The outcome of today has been 133 pieces assembled which makes the total done so far 1095 pieces with 3465 pieces to go.

Here are few pictures.

This is the end of day 6.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Day 5

Day 5 ( Monday Jan 17th, 2011 ):

Spent most of the time sorting out the "ocean" pieces. Looked like more than 1500 pieces. That was a mission by itself.

Finally could join the black left lower corner with the title part. The total assembled today was 89 pieces that brings the grant total to 962 with 3598 to go.

Here are couple of photos.

This is the end of day 5.

Sunday, January 16, 2011

Day 4

Day 4 ( Sunday Jan 16th, 2011):

it's getting tougher, with each day passes, to find the right pieces. Still focusing on the four parts that we have started and making them grow by assembling more pieces into them.

The result of today's work was assembling 97 pieces, making the grand total assembled 873 pieces with 3687 pieces to go.

Here are few pictures:

The is the end of day 4.

Saturday, January 15, 2011

DAY 3

Day 3 ( Saturday Jan 15th, 2011 ):

Today it was really difficult and tough. Sorting was of paramount importance as we needed to find out many pieces in random. Thought to work from inside out by starting to assemble the black corners. Started with the lower left corner to build it up. Also, the small yellow map of yesterday was growing up. The total assembled today was 149 pieces with 3784 pieces to go.

Here are couple of photos:

This is the end of day 3.

Friday, January 14, 2011

At the end of day 2, we have assembled 262 pieces which makes the total assembled 627 pieces and 3933 left to go. We were lucky to assemble the edge frame, and hope that the pieces are assembled correctly.

The puzzle we are working on right now is:

Here are few pictures of the result of day 2:

This is the end of Day 2.

Day 1 & 2

I was web surfing and found a picture of a big puzzle that was made by Ravensburger from Germany. At the time they have introduced it in the market, it was the biggest that ever been manufactured. This puzzle is made of 18,240 pieces and it is called " 4 Historic World Maps ". Here is a picture of it:

I have been searching for this huge 18,240 pcs puzzle over the net for about 2 weeks. I couldn't find it anywhere as it was discontinued by the manufacture and was out of stuck at all puzzle stores. I have finally found it in UK in a store called "the Modeller" located in Stroud.

The puzzle took a week in the mail. We have received it yesterday "Thursday Jan 13th, 2011".

DAY 1 ( Thursday Jan 13th, 2011 ):

As soon as we received it, we opened it and found that it consists of 4 bags. Each bag contains one of the 4 maps displayed above. Each bag contains 4560 pieces.

We have started with part D "Right lower section". The puzzle is really very difficult. We normally start by sorting the puzzle parts and get out the straight edges and assemble them. The edges were very difficult as they are all the same golden color. While sorting out the colors, the kids started to assemble some parts that they found. The first day ended by assembling 365 pcs. So there are 4195 pieces to go. Here are few pictures:

DAY 2 ( Friday Jan 14th, 2011 ):

It was very hard to assemble more pieces. We had almost half of the puzzel's pieces into bowls as they match in color or design. The rest we had to align them beside each others to be able to find a specific piece. Still the frame edge very hard to assemble. We are thinking to do it for the first time from inside out. Hope this technique will work out.

Will post later how many were done and how many are left, as we are still working on it. As well as more pictures than the one posted above.
